How to visit every must-see destination in Ireland without renting a car

Updated: Dec 19, 2020

A tourist's guide to Ireland for non-drivers - or those who prefer to stay on the right side of the road!

The famously narrow roads of Slea Head Drive in Dingle

Whether you aren't a driver or are simply unsure about driving on the left side of the road, Ireland can be seen almost entirely without driving - sit back and enjoy the view!

Ask any Irish native about the public transport system, and you'll hear about its unreliability and limitations. Ask a tourist, and she'll tell you how to see all the beauties of Ireland without having to put foot to the gas pedal yourself. So put on your headphones and take in Ireland without the stress of the tiny roads with these 5 tips.

Tip 1: Plan. Know what areas you want to visit, and work backward from there.

Google maps is your friend for Bus Eirann and Irish Rail, and now directs you to private companies too! Be sure to go directly to CityLink and GoBus for the most accurate time tables and to book tickets in advance for best prices.

Do book early for Irish Rail, as tickets are much more expensive for day-of travel!

Tip 2: Walk.

Have an idea of how far you're able to walk in a day. Your b&b is a mile from the bus stop - do you mind dragging a suitcase that far? Will you pay for a taxi?

Factor in the small distances, but if you're a capable hiker, why not walk the Ring of Kerry? Kerry is easy to get to, with an airport, train station, and major bus depot.

Once you're there, take in the beauties of Kerry at your own pace.

Tip 3: Day trips.

If it takes multiple bus transfers or bad timing to get to the next must-see, consider taking a day trip and simply not going back to the original destination. Tell your driver so he's not worried you're lost or left behind!

Use this trick to travel from Cork to Dingle. For the same price as the three busesenjoy the guided tour around Killarney and Dingle and then wish the rest of the tour a good trip back while you check into your B&B!

AirBnB experiences can take you to some of the best hidden gems in Ireland

Tip 4: AirBnB tours. This site is known for great deals on accommodation, but increasingly there are niche experiences available as well.

Want to tour around a town and be taught photography, or be part of the shoot itself? Or, join a hike with a local to see all the off-the-beaten-path sites.

Often, these tours are small and the guide is willing to pick you up at a bus stop near the destination. Send a message and ask - and with many tours priced less than $30 you have great value for a day at a local secret.

Tip 5: Make a new friend (with caution)!

When the bus or rail simply won't do, make some new friends.

You might meet locals who are happy to show off the sights (like this lovely spot in Dingle - prime for Fungi the dolphin sightings, he said!).

Or, meet another tourist who agrees to carpool! Either way: Be safe and use good judgement!
